Becoming a Graphic Designer – A General Overview

Art designer is the name for various specialized job functions within the visual arts, such as theater, design, advertising, multimedia, publishing, design, film and TV, the Internet, and computer games. They are associated with the creative and technical aspects of the arts. An art designer usually works under a licensed or permitted form of employment offered by a company or organization that deals in the visual arts industry. Working as an art director often involves adapting designs for film or to a TV, or designing theatrical pieces. The person who designs the costumes for a production can also be an art director.

If you have an interest in becoming one, there are many art design programs at various colleges and universities around the United States. Most of these programs will take three years of schooling and two years of internship, or apprentice work. However, there are also programs at art schools, community colleges, technical schools, and vocational schools. Some universities also offer a degree in art design, but this is not quite the same as a full on art designer’s position at an adobe creative suite.

For individuals who have an interest and a knack for creativity, an internship may be the right route to take. On the job training and experience will help develop one’s skills, while working with others who are better than yourself will allow you to hone your skills. It is always helpful to surround yourself with people who have good art designers in their pool of professionals. This will allow you to learn from them and get their advice and feedback on your progress as a graphic designer.
